Lift Up Your Hands Ministries
Lift Up Your Hands Ministries was founded in 1993 by
Founder and Director Min. Karen L. Rush. A few years
before that, the Lord had placed on Karen's heart to interpret
Gospel songs through the medium of Sign-mime. Karen was
first introduced to Sign-mime when she was in the Thespian
Troupe at her Senior High School. It was at Edwin Denby
High in Detroit, Michigan, where her Thespian Drama Troupe
would use the combination of American Sign Language and
pantomime to interpret songs.
After High School, Karen enrolled in the Sign Language
Studies program, at Madonna University of Livonia,
Michigan. She graduated in 1993 with a Bachelors of Arts
Degree in Sign Language Studies. This was also the year
she started Lift Up Your Hands Ministries. She began
teaching Basic Sign Language classes at different churches
and community centers in the Detroit Area. She also gave a
full length solo concert at Sweet Kingdom Missionary Baptist
Church in Detroit on May 28, 1997.
Karen, or Kay as she's called within the Deaf community, has
served in the past as one of the sign language interpreters
for the Hands in Service Ministries at her local church in
Southfield, MI. She was also the Interpreter for the cable
television show "Building Bridges and Breaking Barriers",
hosted by Arthur Nowlin & Dr. Kim Logan-Nowlin and is also
the sign language consultant and interpreter for Dr. Kim
Logan-Nowlin's Annual Sign Language choir's concert "God's
Hands Of Praise. In September of 2005, Karen was awarded
the Distinguished Alumni Award in the field of religion from
Madonna University. She currently serves as the Assistant
Director of Evangel Christian Church's, A Word in the Hand
sign-mime Choir.
Five years after the ministry began, on Karen's birthday, May
9, 1998, came the debut of the "Lift Up Your Hands Ministries
Sign-mime Choir", at Karen's Holy Ghost Birthday
Celebration. Ten Spirit filled Christians made up that choir
ranging from the ages of 8 to 37 years old. From that debut,
the choir has ministered at various church functions and
programs in and around the Detroit area. Also from that
debut, the choir has grown to a membership of 30 members
ranging from age 8 to 75 years of age.
The Lord has blessed this ministry and will continue to bless
it as long as we continue to Bless Him in all we say and do.
